TV Listings for Welsh Rugby
Rugby League has been played in Wales since 1907 when Ebbw Vale and
Merthyr Tydfil joined the Northern Rugby League. In the contemporary
era the professional game owes its origins to the Cardiff Blue
Dragons who were formed in 1981 and played out of Ninian Park,
Cardiff under the direction of David Watkins.
The club enjoyed
considerable success and attracted high-profile Rugby Union converts
such as Steve Fenwick, Tommy David, Brynmor Williams and Paul
Ringer. In 1984 Clive Millman and Lauri Tattersall bought the Blue
Dragons and moved it to Bridgend. Here is was coached by former
Salford A team player Jeff Woods and ex-St.
Helens player John
Warlow.
In later years the success of Wales at international level
led to the formation of South Wales RLFC. Coached by Clive Griffiths
and assisted by Danny Sheehy the team played in Morfa Stadium,
Swansea, the Talbot Athletic grounds, Aberavon and Cardiff Arms
Park.
