It is important to turn down your contrast to achieve more natural,
accurate image and reduce risk of CRT burn- in. However, on
Toshibas, picture contrast and brightness settings do not affect the
test patterns, including the commonly used service convergence grid.
The overly bright default convergence grid makes it hard to do a
really accurate convergence. Also, the bright grid somewhat
increases the chance for burn-in, especially if you're in the grid
for several hours doing critical adjustments.
Fortunately there is an easy solution for the
Toshibas. There are Design Mode (if you can access them with your
model) and ADDR Mode parameters that affect test pattern contrast &
brightness, independently of the picture. When adjusting these
parameters, turn them way down, to closer approximate actual
program viewing.
On Toshiba models with access to the Design Mode, you can adjust the
following codes:
RGBB (test pattern brightness) (Original Value: 3B) RGBC (test pattern
contrast) (Original Value: 64)
