Rear Projection TVs

A rear projection TV is a self-contained big screen TV inside a large cabinet in which the image is reflected off a mirror inside the back of the television onto the inside of a projection screen on the front of your TV.

Because of new technology that produces superior picture quality and lighter weight, smaller size television cabinets, the best rear projection televisions you can buy today are DLP rear projection TV and LCD rear projection TV sets, although the lowest rear projection TV prices will still be found on conventional CRT based rear projection TVs.

DLP projection TV is based on Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) technology developed and licensed by Texas Instruments. DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. DLP projection tends to produce better black (and contrast) than LCD-based projection TVs.

LCD projection TV is based on the Liquid Crystal Display technology that we are all familiar with on digital wrist watches and the screens on laptop computers. Perhaps the most popular LCD projection televisions available today are Sony's LCD rear projection TV vast lineup and Hitachi LCD projection TV models.

Most rear projection TVs are HDTV monitors only, meaning they require adding an HDTV receiver to view high definition programming
