DirecTV's fight against satellite signal piracy
DirecTV's letters
and lawsuits accuse people of purchasing and using "illegal signal
theft equipment" and "pirate access devices". There fight is for
people to use smart cards and such technology legitimately.
Is it illegal to merely possess these devices?
Merely possessing these
devices is not illegal; however, intercepting DirecTV is. As long as
you possess and use these devices for legitimate purposes, you are
not violating the law.
